The 4th London battalion arrived in France in January, 1915 as part of the Ferozepore Brigade, 3rd (Lahore) Division of the Indian Army. They were not involved in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle which was fought between 10th and 13th March but at the end of it Ferozepore Brigade relieved Gharwal Brigade and 4th London moved to Richebourg St Vaast and went into the trenches for the first time at Rue des Berceaux. Alternating company by company, 4th London remained in these trenches until 24th March when they moved to billets near Merville. This was first experience of trench warfare and shell fire, which at times was heavy and it was here that they suffered their first casualties including William Andrade who died from wounds on 15th March.
